What is a .IPS file?
The .ips extension is used by both IPS ROM patches and the crash and hang reports macOS and iOS write.
IPS ROM patch
- What it is
- An International Patching System patch for a console ROM (fan translations, romhacks). Analyser walks the patch records and reports how many there are, the run-length records and the highest offset touched.
- How to tell it apart
- An IPS patch begins with the ASCII text PATCH.
Apple crash report
- What it is
- A crash, hang or diagnostic report from macOS 12 or later, iOS or iPadOS (found in Console, ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports or Settings > Privacy > Analytics). Analyser reads the app, version, bundle ID, OS build, device, exception type and codes, the faulting thread and the loaded binary images.
- How to tell it apart
- An Apple report is JSON text beginning with {.
- Did you know
- Depth of analysis
- .IPS is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
- Open a .IPS file
- Drag a .IPS file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
