What is a .AC3 file?
AC-3 (Dolby Digital) is a surround-sound audio format used on DVDs and in broadcast.
- Did you know
- Dolby Digital debuted in cinemas in 1992 and became the standard sound format for DVDs.
- On a 35mm film print, the Dolby Digital data is optically printed in the tiny gaps between the sprocket holes along the film edge.
- AC-3 carries up to 5.1 channels, where the “.1” is a dedicated low-frequency effects channel for the subwoofer.
- Dolby Digital is one of the core audio formats every DVD-Video player must decode, which is a large part of why it became so ubiquitous.
- Batman Returns is generally cited as the first film to receive a wide theatrical release in Dolby Digital.
- What Analyser shows you
- Inspect the waveform, spectrogram, codec, bitrate, channels, and tags of MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, and Opus audio, and play Apple Core Audio (CAF) files such as iMessage voice messages, decoded on-device with FFmpeg where the browser cannot.
- Open a .AC3 file
- Drag a .AC3 file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It opens entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
